ABA glossary
Competing stimulus
Definition
An item or activity whose availability is associated with less problem behavior, often because it provides reinforcement that substitutes for what the problem behavior produced.
Example from a session
Access to a vibrating toy reduces hand mouthing because both seem to provide similar sensory stimulation.
