Counterconditioning
Definition
A respondent procedure that pairs a stimulus eliciting an unwanted response, such as fear, with a stimulus that elicits an incompatible response, so the first stimulus comes to elicit the new response.
Example from a session
A child is given a favorite snack each time the dentist's chair comes into view, until the chair no longer elicits crying.
