To become a BCBA, earn a qualifying master’s degree through one of the BACB’s two pathways from 2027, complete 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork (or 1,500 concentrated), apply, and pass the 185-question exam, according to the BCBA Handbook (updated October 2026). Only complete applications received by December 31, 2026, can be reviewed under the older 2022 rules.

This page is for RBTs, graduate students and career changers planning the whole route to certification with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). Its center is a table of which rules apply to you, followed by timelines and costs worked out from BACB limits. We rechecked every BACB rule here on November 4, 2026. More certification guides are in Professional Development.

What are the steps to become a BCBA?

The path to BCBA certification has seven steps, and fieldwork can start once your first qualifying class has met, so steps 3 to 5 overlap. The table uses the rules for applications from January 1, 2027.

Step What you do The rule
1. Hold a bachelor’s degree Finish a bachelor’s degree in any field; the BACB names no required major (our reading), and graduate programs set their own admission rules Needed before graduate study in practice, not a separate BACB rule
2. Choose a pathway An accredited or recognized degree (Pathway 1), or a master’s plus coursework (Pathway 2) Two pathways from January 1, 2027
3. Start graduate coursework Attend the first class of a qualifying behavior-analytic course Fieldwork hours can’t begin before this
4. Complete fieldwork Work under a qualified BCBA supervisor with a signed contract 2,000 hours, or 1,500 concentrated, within five continuous years
5. Finish the degree Earn the master’s degree and, for Pathway 2, all the required courses Pathway 2: 315 instructional hours in 7 courses
6. Apply Submit and pay in your BACB portal account, and have each institution send official transcripts $245; review takes up to 45 days once payment and all documents arrive
7. Pass the exam Schedule with Pearson VUE and sit the 185-question exam $125 per appointment; two years from approval to pass

Before you plan any of this, check where you live: the BACB accepts applications only from residents of the United States, Canada (not Ontario) and, until January 1, 2027, Australia (Handbook, pp. 1 and 3).

Should you apply before or after December 31, 2026?

Rush to file before December 31, 2026 only if the 2022 rules help you (four groups below); if you already meet the 2027 rules, take time to get every document right. The 2022 rules apply only if the BACB can receive your whole application by that date; anything later falls under the 2027 rules. The BACB’s wording, in its post 2027 BCBA and BCaBA Requirements: What You Need to Know (August 11, 2026), is: “To be reviewed under the current 2022 requirements, your complete application (including payment and all required documents) must be received by December 31, 2026.”

The BACB’s transition guidance (updated January 2026, p. 1) says the same thing from the other side: “if you do not apply and meet the current requirements before January 1, 2027, you must meet the new requirements that take effect on that date.” As of November 4, 2026, we found no extension, cut-off time or time zone on the BACB’s site.

Which rules apply to you?

Find the row that matches where you are today. The table is our reading of the BACB documents linked on this page, not a BACB decision; the BACB says it can’t judge whether your degree, coursework or experience qualifies outside a formal application review.

Where you are today Rules that apply What to do now
Degree, coursework and all fieldwork done; not yet applied 2022 if everything arrives by December 31; otherwise 2027 Submit and pay now, and ask each institution to send transcripts the same day
Fieldwork ends in November or December 2026 2022 only if signed final forms and all documents also arrive Treat November as your last safe fieldwork month, and complete both the 2022 and 2027 forms until you know
Fieldwork or coursework runs into 2027 2027 Use the 2027 monthly forms now; earlier hours must also meet the 2027 rules, and earlier 2022-rule observations may not
Pathway 2 courses taken under the 2022 content areas; applying later 2027 Check your courses against the five gaps below with your Pathway 2 Program Contact
Pathway 1 degree, earned or in progress Set by your application date; the degree rule doesn’t change Confirm your degree was conferred while the program was accredited or recognized, then follow the fieldwork rows above
Relying on Pathway 3 or Pathway 4 2022 only Apply, with every requirement met, before January 1, 2027; both pathways then close
Not enrolled yet, or an RBT considering graduate school 2027 Compare accredited programs first, because Pathway 2 closes on January 1, 2032

Our reading: filing under the 2022 rules helps four groups, because all fieldwork must meet the rules in force when you apply (transition guidance, pp. 2 and 4):

  • Pathway 2 applicants whose courses miss the 2027 freestanding-course rules.
  • Pathway 2 applicants whose degree or coursework took under one calendar year.
  • Anyone relying on Pathway 3 or 4.
  • Anyone whose logged months have client observations shorter than the 2027 minimums.

Our reading: if you meet both sets of rules and already hold the 2027 forms and any attestation you need, you gain nothing from the 2022 date, so take the time to check that every document is correct before you submit, rather than rush an application that comes back with action items.

You must live in a country where the BACB accepts applications: the United States, Canada (not Ontario) and, until January 1, 2027, Australia (Handbook, pp. 1 and 3). If you live anywhere else, including the UK (Upcoming Changes), you can’t apply. Australian residents also have earlier dates: the BACB’s July 2024 Newsletter says they must submit an approvable application by December 1, 2026, and those with active examination authorizations must pass the exam by December 31, 2026.

What counts as a complete application?

At minimum, a complete application means the BACB holds every item below by the deadline (our reading from the Handbook, pp. 7-9 and 29-30):

  • The certification application, submitted in your BACB portal account.
  • The $245 payment.
  • Official transcripts, sent directly by the institution that conferred your qualifying degree (showing the conferral date) and by each institution where you took qualifying courses, if different. You can’t upload them, and the Handbook says not to request them until you have submitted the application.
  • Your signed Final Fieldwork Verification Form or forms.
  • For Pathway 2, the Coursework Attestation from your Pathway 2 Program Contact. An older VCS Coordinator attestation on record as of December 31, 2025, works only until December 31, 2026.

Three things the BACB’s wording leaves to interpretation. All three are our reading:

  • The 90-day window doesn’t extend the date. The Handbook (p. 30) normally allows 90 days after payment for documents, but the deadline post names “all required documents.” Paying on December 30 and sending transcripts in January would miss it.
  • Received, not approved. The date applies to what the BACB receives, and review can take up to 45 days (p. 30), so a decision can arrive in 2027. On November 4, 2026, the BACB’s processing page showed it reviewing submissions from October 28, 2026.
  • A second application would be a 2027 application. If you don’t resolve a problem within 90 days of applying, you must file and pay again (p. 30). A new filing after December 31 can’t be reviewed under the 2022 rules.

University offices may close over the winter break, so request transcripts well before then.

What is a board certified behavior analyst?

A board certified behavior analyst (BCBA) is a graduate-level practitioner certified by the BACB to provide applied behavior analysis services independently and to supervise RBTs, BCaBAs and others who implement those services (Handbook, p. 1). RBTs and BCaBAs work under supervision; a BCaBA may not provide behavior-analytic services without a BCBA’s supervision (BCaBA Handbook, p. 1). A BCBA practices independently and can supervise both, plus trainees’ fieldwork (Handbook, pp. 1 and 18). The BCBA-D is a designation for BCBAs with doctoral training, not a separate certification (Handbook, p. 1).

What are the 2027 BCBA requirements?

The 2027 BCBA requirements are a master’s degree through Pathway 1 or Pathway 2, 315 hours of coursework for Pathway 2, 2,000 hours of Supervised Fieldwork (or 1,500 concentrated) with at least 60% unrestricted, and a pass on the 185-question exam (Handbook, p. 37), according to the BACB’s 2027 BCBA Requirements (updated February 2026). Compared with 2022, the fieldwork totals and the 315 coursework hours stay, but two pathways close, Pathway 2 tightens and the monthly fieldwork limits change. The exam doesn’t change: the transition guidance (p. 4) says there are currently no upcoming changes to it.

Requirement 2022 rules (complete application by December 31, 2026) 2027 rules
Pathways 4 2
Pathway 2 degree Master’s or higher, earned at any time Same, but not earned in less than one calendar year
Pathway 2 coursework 315 hours; several areas could share courses 315 hours in 7 freestanding courses, over at least a year
Fieldwork hours per month 20 to 130 20 to 160
Concentrated supervision 10% of hours 7.5% of hours
Observations with a client 1 a month 60 minutes a month (90 for concentrated)

Sources: Handbook, pp. 8-9 and 14; 2027 BCBA Requirements, pp. 2-4. The two 2022 pathways that close are Pathway 3 (faculty teaching and research) and Pathway 4 (postdoctoral experience), so if you are on one of those routes, the “Relying on Pathway 3 or Pathway 4” row above is yours. The BCBA fieldwork documentation guide compares the fieldwork rules and forms line by line. Continuing education is a maintenance rule, not tied to how you applied, so it is not in this table; see “How do you keep BCBA certification?” below.

What are the two BCBA pathways?

Pathway 1 is a master’s degree or higher from an accredited or recognized behavior analysis program, and Pathway 2 is a master’s degree or higher in any field plus behavior-analytic coursework (2027 BCBA Requirements, pp. 1-3).

2027 rule Pathway 1: accredited or recognized program Pathway 2: behavior-analytic coursework
Degree A master’s earned while the program was APBA-accredited, or a master’s or doctorate from 2015 on, earned while the program was ABAI-accredited or recognized (Tier 1, 2a or 2b) A master’s or higher in any field from a qualifying institution, earned over at least one calendar year
Coursework Included in the degree 315 hours, C or better (or a pass in a pass/fail course), at a school with a Pathway 2 Program Contact, completed within 10 years of the application year
Fieldwork and exam The same for both The same for both
Closes Stays open January 1, 2032

The BACB’s own view is that “ideally, you should obtain your education in behavior analysis from a behavior-analytic degree program” (Handbook, p. 3). Our reading: if you are starting from a bachelor’s, choose Pathway 1, because Pathway 2 has an end date. Pathway 2 makes sense if you already hold a master’s and can apply well before 2032. Search ABAI-accredited programs in the ABAI accredited programs list, which says recognized Tier 2a and 2b programs are listed separately on ABAI’s Tiered Model of Education site, and read about APBA accreditation. Then check each program’s first-time rate in the BACB’s university pass rates; the BACB says to evaluate each program’s rate on its own and not to compare it with the overall exam pass rate.

What degree do you need to become a BCBA, and can you skip the master’s?

You need a master’s degree or higher: a behavior-analytic master’s from an accredited or recognized program for Pathway 1, or a master’s in any field plus behavior-analytic coursework for Pathway 2. You can’t skip it, because both 2027 pathways require one, and the BACB’s bachelor’s-level certification is the BCaBA (Upcoming Changes). The BCBA rules name no required bachelor’s major, by our reading, though graduate programs set their own admission rules.

What coursework do you need for Pathway 2?

Pathway 2 needs 315 instructional hours in six content areas, taught in seven freestanding courses from January 1, 2027. A freestanding course is one where the required content makes up the majority of the course (transition guidance, p. 2).

2027 content area 2027 hours and courses 2022 equivalent
Basic Principles of Behavior 45 hours, 1 course Philosophical Underpinnings; Concepts and Principles (90 hours for both 2027 areas)
Theory & Philosophy in Behavior Analysis 45 hours, 1 course Same 2022 area as above
Research Methods in Behavior Analysis 45 hours, 1 course Measurement, Data Display, and Interpretation; Experimental Design (45 hours)
Behavior Assessment & Intervention 90 hours, 2 courses Behavior Assessment (45) and Behavior-Change Procedures (60)
Organizational Behavior Management 45 hours, 1 course Personnel Supervision and Management (30 hours)
Ethics in Behavior Analysis 45 hours, 1 course Ethics Code and Code-Enforcement System; Professionalism (45 hours)

If you took courses under the 2022 rules and will apply in 2027 or later, the same guidance tells you to check five things:

  1. A standalone Basic Principles course.
  2. A standalone Theory & Philosophy course.
  3. 90 Assessment & Intervention hours across two freestanding courses.
  4. A freestanding Organizational Behavior Management or supervision course with 45 hours, up from 30.
  5. One freestanding Ethics course with 45 hours, no longer split across courses.

Each semester credit counts as 15 instructional hours and each quarter credit as 10 (p. 2), so 315 hours is 21 semester credits or 31.5 quarter credits. Your Pathway 2 Program Contact attests that the hours were met, so take this list to them first.

How many fieldwork hours do you need?

You need 2,000 hours of Supervised Fieldwork or 1,500 hours of Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork, and at least 60% of them must be unrestricted activities (2027 BCBA Requirements, p. 2). You may use one type or both; if you mix them, the BCBA Handbook (p. 15) multiplies concentrated hours by 1.33 toward the 2,000.

2027 rule Supervised Fieldwork Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork
Total hours 2,000 1,500
Unrestricted hours, at least 1,200 900
Supervision 5% (100 hours over the whole) 7.5% (112.5 hours over the whole)
Hours a month 20 to 160 20 to 160
Client observation a month 60 minutes 90 minutes

The unrestricted and whole-fieldwork supervision totals are our arithmetic from those percentages. At least half of supervised hours must be individual. All hours must fall within five continuous years, counted by calendar month (Handbook, p. 16).

Before you log the first hour you need a qualified supervisor, a signed supervision contract and a started qualifying course; hours can begin after the first class meeting, and you must earn a C or better, or a pass in a pass/fail course, in that course for them to count (p. 15). Your supervisor can’t be related to you, subordinate to you or employed by you, or in a multiple relationship with you, such as a personal or business one, though paying a supervisor for supervision is allowed (p. 18). The supervisor also needs an 8-hour supervision training before the contract is signed (p. 18).

These pages cover the detail: restricted vs unrestricted hours, monthly and final verification forms, supervision contracts and fieldwork audits.

What is on the BCBA exam?

The BCBA exam has 185 multiple-choice questions, 175 scored and 10 unscored, covering 104 tasks in 9 content areas, and the 4 hours include the terms and tutorial (Handbook, pp. 32 and 37). It follows the BCBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.) under both sets of rules.

In 2025, 51% of 9,955 first-time candidates passed and 23% of 13,196 retake candidates passed, according to the BACB Annual Data Report. The BCBA exam pass rate page covers those numbers and retakes. To study, use the BCBA study hub, the 6th-edition task list and the BCBA practice exam.

How do you apply for the BCBA exam?

To apply and test (Handbook, pp. 3, 29-31, 35):

  1. Create your BACB portal account early, using a personal email and your full legal name exactly as it appears on your ID.
  2. When you meet every requirement, submit the application and pick your pathway. Picking the wrong one may mean a new application and a new fee.
  3. Pay the $245 fee.
  4. Ask the institution that conferred your degree, and each institution where you took qualifying courses, to send official transcripts to the BACB.
  5. Wait for the decision, up to 45 days from when the BACB has your payment and all documents.
  6. Schedule with Pearson VUE using the instructions emailed within 24 to 48 hours of approval. You have two years to pass, with up to 8 attempts at least 30 days apart.

How long does it take to become a BCBA?

Expect about 2.5 years from your first graduate class to the exam at 80 to 100 fieldwork hours a month, and about 5.5 years at 34 hours a month, the least that fits 2,000 hours inside the five-year fieldwork limit, by our arithmetic from BACB limits.

The BACB publishes no total. Add time for a bachelor’s degree if you don’t have one. A Pathway 2 reader on the 34-hour pace has almost no room: starting in January 2027, fieldwork ends in November 2031, one month before an application would have to be in (our reading). Ohio State’s guide (2025) quotes six to eight years, but that counts from “the start of undergraduate education.”

Two things set the length. The BACB says a master’s degree or the behavior-analytic coursework “usually takes two years” (February 2026 Newsletter, p. 1), and fieldwork depends on your monthly hours:

Fieldwork hours a month Months to reach 2,000 hours Months to reach 1,500 concentrated hours
40 50 38
60 34 25
80 25 19
100 20 15
130 16 12
160 (the 2027 maximum) 13 10

Months are rounded up. To fit 2,000 hours inside the five-year limit you need to average at least 34 hours a month. By our arithmetic, the fastest route on 2,000 hours is 13 months of fieldwork at 160 hours a month, and concentrated fieldwork takes 10 months. Pathway 2 coursework needs at least a year, and review takes up to 45 days (a ceiling, not a minimum). Treat 13 months as a limit, not a plan.

Here is the same arithmetic for two fictional readers who start in January 2027.

Stage (fictional examples) Reader A: an RBT with a bachelor’s, Pathway 1 Reader B: a master’s in another field, Pathway 2
Coursework Two-year master’s, ending December 2028 Seven courses over two years, ending December 2028
Fieldwork plan 80 hours a month, 60 unrestricted 100 hours a month, 60 unrestricted
Fieldwork ends January 2029 (25 months) August 2028 (20 months)
Applies February 2029 January 2029
Decision, within 45 days By mid-April 2029 By mid-March 2029
Exam June 2029 May 2029
Total from the first class About 2.5 years About 2.5 years

Reader B finishes fieldwork first but still waits for the courses, because the application needs them. A reader who logs only 40 unrestricted hours a month takes 50 months to reach 2,000 hours, about 4 years of fieldwork; with at least 27 restricted hours a month on top, the 40 unrestricted hours reach 1,200 in 30 months and 2,000 counted hours in the same 30, as in the RBT plan table below.

How much does BCBA certification cost?

BACB and Pearson VUE fees for one exam attempt total $370, a $245 application plus a $125 appointment (Handbook, p. 31). Tuition and any paid supervision are separate costs, and the BACB sets neither; they vary by program and supervisor, and we list no tuition figures because we have no verified prices.

Fee Amount Paid to When
Certification application $245 BACB Once, unless you must reapply
Exam appointment $125, plus any tax Pearson VUE Every attempt
Recertification $215 ($290 for BCBA-D) BACB Every 2 years

Sources: Handbook, pp. 31, 34-35 and 50. BACB fees are nonrefundable. Retakes ($140 application plus the $125 appointment) and rescheduling fees are covered on the BCBA exam pass rate page.

The BACB publishes no tuition or supervision prices, so ask each program for its per-credit rate and whether it includes supervised fieldwork, and ask each supervisor for an hourly rate. Use this worksheet for your own total. The tuition and supervision rates in the last column are fictional, chosen for easy arithmetic; we have no verified market prices for either, so ask each program and supervisor.

Cost line (fictional example) How to work it out Fictional example
Application and one exam $245 + $125 $370
Pathway 2 courses 21 semester credits × your per-credit tuition 21 × $600 = $12,600
Paid supervision, if your employer doesn’t provide it 100 supervised hours × your supervisor’s hourly rate 100 × $50 = $5,000
Total $17,970

For Pathway 1, replace the course line with the program’s full tuition. Concentrated fieldwork changes the supervision line: by our arithmetic, 2027 concentrated fieldwork needs 112.5 supervised hours (7.5% of 1,500), standard fieldwork needs 100 (5% of 2,000), and under 2022 concentrated needed 150 (10% of 1,500).

Two ways to pay are worth checking. US 529 plans now cover BACB application, retake and exam scheduling fees as well as university costs, though you need to confirm that your state plan has adopted the change (February 2026 Newsletter, p. 5). Veterans who qualify for the GI Bill can be reimbursed for exam fees whether or not they pass (Handbook, p. 31).

How do you go from RBT to BCBA?

An RBT becomes a BCBA by the same route as anyone else, because neither pathway lists RBT certification and working as an RBT doesn’t count as fieldwork on its own. The route is common: the BACB wrote in 2023 that nearly half of recently certified BCBAs and BCaBAs were RBTs when they applied. If you aren’t certified yet, start with how to become an RBT; you don’t need to be an RBT to become a BCBA.

The rules that change an RBT’s plan come from that BACB post and the Handbook (pp. 1, 14-15, 17 and 40):

  • Hours before your first qualifying class don’t count. Fieldwork can’t begin until coursework has started, a supervisor is in place and a contract is signed.
  • Most RBT work is restricted. Delivering therapy can fill at most 40% of fieldwork, which is 800 of 2,000 hours.
  • While you hold RBT certification and log fieldwork, you must meet its maintenance requirements, including ongoing RBT supervision.
  • RBT supervision and fieldwork supervision aren’t interchangeable. Some of a supervision meeting may count, “but probably not all” of it, and fieldwork needs its own documentation.
  • Your RBT supervisor can supervise fieldwork only if they meet both sets of requirements.
  • Your RBT certification ends after you pass the BCBA exam, 180 days later or on its expiration date, whichever comes first.

By our arithmetic, the 1,200 unrestricted hours can set an RBT’s finish date, because a full therapy schedule doesn’t shorten them. Counted hours are unrestricted hours plus restricted hours capped at 800, and you finish when you have 1,200 unrestricted and 2,000 counted hours.

Fictional monthly plan Months to 1,200 unrestricted Months to 2,000 counted hours Finishes in
20 unrestricted + 60 restricted 60 60 60 months, the five-year limit
40 unrestricted + 40 restricted 30 30 30 months
60 unrestricted + 20 restricted 20 25 25 months
60 unrestricted + 40 restricted 20 20 20 months

Once you reach 800 restricted hours, further restricted hours don’t help you, because at least 60% of the hours you count must be unrestricted (our reading). The BACB doesn’t spell out how to handle restricted hours beyond the cap, so agree with your supervisor which hours go on your forms.

The first plan leaves no margin, because all hours must fall within five continuous years. Ask your supervisor early for unrestricted work tied to your clients, such as data graphing and analysis, writing and revising programs, and training staff and caregivers (Handbook, p. 17). The restricted vs unrestricted guide lists which activities qualify.

What changes after 2027?

Three more dated changes follow, and the largest is that Pathway 2 ends on January 1, 2032, according to the BACB’s Upcoming Changes page.

Effective date Change
January 1, 2028 Pathway 2 Program Contacts must be at an institution in a country within the BACB’s jurisdiction
January 1, 2029 Pathway 1 applicants must hold a master’s degree equivalent to a US master’s degree
January 1, 2032 Pathway 1 becomes the only pathway, and ABAI Tier 2a and 2b programs are no longer accepted

Our reading of the 2032 date: a Pathway 2 student needs a complete application in before January 1, 2032, and that leaves little room for someone starting in late 2027 who then pauses fieldwork. If you choose a Tier 2a or 2b program and might apply near 2032, ask whether it plans to become accredited.

How do you keep BCBA certification?

You keep BCBA certification by earning 32 continuing education units (CEUs) every 2 years, following the BACB’s ethics code and self-reporting rules, and applying to recertify before your date for $215 (Handbook, pp. 43 and 49-50).

Under the 2027 rules, 4 of those CEUs must be in ethics and, if you supervise, 4 in supervision (2027 BCBA Requirements, p. 4). The current Handbook (pp. 43 and 49) still says 3 in supervision, if you supervised RBTs or BCaBAs at any point in the cycle. The BACB applies the 2027 rules to individuals “maintaining” certification and doesn’t state the exact trigger for BCBAs. Our reading is that this includes people certified under the 2022 rules, from recertification dates on or after January 1, 2027.

The BCBA recertification guide has the tracker, and the Ethics Code explainer maps the ethics code you agree to follow.

You may use the credential as soon as you pass, and your number appears in your portal within 24 hours (Handbook, p. 40). If your US state licenses behavior analysts, contact its board before you practice; the BACB keeps a list of licensure states. You must also stay within your scope of competence, and during your first year any fieldwork you supervise requires a monthly consulting supervisor (Handbook, pp. 40-41).

What should you do next?
